Bulking Supplements Or A Standard Diet?
by Richard Black, Ric
At any general foods store you may encounter, you will notice a wide variety of supplements made specifically for bodybuilders. These bulking supplements promise to help your muscles grow considerably when you work out, and all you need to do is buy their extremely large jug and mix it into your food or drink twice a day before your workouts.

The question is, then, should you use these bulking supplements? Or is a standard diet enough to get you the same effects without having to spend money on these powders?

Bulking Supplements

Natural bulking supplements are often filled with a lot of the ingredients you need in order to gain muscle. They often have the necessary carbohydrates, an extremely high amount of protein, and other natural minerals that are said to help your muscles increase in size.

There are several things that the bulking supplements have correct. Whey protein, for example, is a phenomenal food to eat after a workout as it is the single most effective food for helping your muscles gain strength and size. Ask any nutrition specialist, even one that is against using bulking supplements, and they will tell you that if you can find whey protein to eat after a meal you should use it because its muscle benefits are off the charts.

At the same time, however, it is the other ingredients you need to look at. Most natural herbal and mineral ingredients for bodybuilding are either not effective or unnecessary, as protein and good carbs are usually more than enough to cover the range of needs for your body.

There are some herbs and minerals that may be effective for muscle growth, but they often do not come in these powders, as these powders primary focus is their protein. Any unnecessary ingredients should be avoided, because if they do not help your muscle growth there is a good chance they are harming it.

Standard Diet

The standard weightlifter's diet is protein and good carbohydrates, usually found in foods like beans, milk and soy (for protein) and whole grains (for carbs). Beyond that, because not a great deal is necessary, that is usually enough for any bodybuilder.

Also, because you are eating these foods, you do not need other foods later. Anyone taking the supplements will still need to eat later, and may be eating harmful fats or other temptations that are worse for your workout and can negatively affect the protein.

Still, whey protein is more effective than most foods you are going to eat regularly, and if you do not have time to have a full meal, you are not going to be able to keep to your standard diet regularly. This is especially true for people that go to the gym before a long drive home.

Which to Choose

Standard diet is ideal, because it has only the ingredients you need and it is made up that is food that is good for you anyway. However, whey protein is extremely good for your workouts, so if you can get your hands on it you should. Also, there are very likely some natural ingredients that are useful for muscle growth, but you should not just assume that a particular mineral is effective simply because it comes in a bulking supplement.
