Carpet Restoration Because Of Flood Damage
by Charmaine Pierce, Cha
Flood damage can take a toll on your carpet. If it doesn't destroy anything else, this is the one thing that it will definitely take a toll on. This is because carpet is nice and fuzzy. It has all of these nice dark places that bacteria and mold can hide in. The water itself is bad enough, but when that mold starts to grow, it gives you more problems than just flood damage. That is why you need to take care of the flood damage as soon as you can after it occurs.

If the flood damage is pipe or roof related

Sometimes individuals experience flood damage because of a leaky roof or a pipe that has burst in their home. If this is the case, then there is an order to things. That order is this: You need to locate the cause of the water first before embarking on any flood damage repairs. If you try to do flood damage repairs before locating the source of the water, then you're going to be replacing the same things all over again. Make sure that when you locate the source that it is the only source. Make sure no more water is leaking out from whatever location before ever putting new carpet into your home or business. If you don't wait, you're risking flood damage again. This could become very expensive.

If the flood damage is due to a natural disaster

If the flood is due to a natural disaster, then that is something that is a bit different. You can't keep the natural disaster from occurring and you can't always prevent the flood damage that is going to occur. You can, however, protect as many as your belongings as possible and sandbag your home to prevent as much water as possible from coming through to your home.

Carpet restoration after flood damage

Whatever the source of the flood damage, the carpet restoration routine is more or less the same. You have to clean it, you have to vacuum it, and you have to disinfect it. The first thing you want to do when combating flood damage to carpets is to find a good disinfectant. Mixing it with a small amount of bleach can give the ultimate effect, but you have to make sure that you've purchased a disinfectant that is safe to mix with bleach. It is actually better to take up the carpet and replace the pad. Flood damage tends to happen under the carpet. By removing the pad, you're removing a majority of the water that can damage the floor boards and later turn to mold. You can then focus your attention on the carpet.

After you've made sure the actual flooring is okay, the new padding can be laid down. Just make sure the carpet is dry when it is put back down. That way you can make sure you don't get the mold that is common with flood damage. That could make your efforts for naught.
