Tips To Reduce Moisture After Water Damage
by Luana Pershing, Lua
Your home is made vulnerable to a wide range of problems after water damage. One of the most common dilemma resulting from water damage is mold contamination. Mold accumulates when there is excessive moisture in the house. When mold is present, a variety of health problems may occur. Because of this, humidity and moisture needs to be strictly controlled to prevent water damage as the toxic mold contaminates your home. Below are five easy tips to help you control humidity and moisture:

Bathing, washing and drying clothes, cooking and cleaning - all these activities can raise the humidity level of a home. To avoid excessive moisture problems, it is highly advised that you practice mechanical procedures like using exhaust fans, air-to-air heat exchangers and dehumidifiers.

There are two rooms which are most prone to excessive moisture. These are your bathroom and kitchen. To maintain a low humidity, always make sure that exhaust fans are working when we you are using your toilet and bath. Do the same thing when you are cooking in the kitchen. Installing dehumidifiers near these two areas will also be a big help.

Change your lifestyle. You can reduce the production of moisture vapor if:
- you avoid boiling too much water or liquid when you are cooking
- decrease your bath time
- wash full loads of clothes instead of washing everyday
- use floor covering which do not require a regular wet mopping
- vent your clothes dryer to the outside

These lifestyle changes may not necessarily apply forever but at least do it for the first three months after the fire damage.

Keep your windows and doors open as often as possible. Make sure that you allow air to freely come in and out of your home. This will ensure good ventilation and prevent mold from contaminating your home.

After the flood damage, inspect your plumbing leaks right away. If found defective, ask a professional for proper restoration or replacement. Leaks are another source of moisture. If plumbing problems are properly addressed, the chances of mildew and mold are reduced.

Avoid leaving steady water in the kitchen. Vases and aquariums need to be temporarily given off until the first three months after flood damage have lapsed. Make sure that water containers are properly sealed all the time.

Do not stock wet rags around the house. This does not only produce moisture but dirty rags can also be a cause for several health hazards.

Water damage, in the form of mold contamination, can cause a variety of health problems. The most common of which are respiratory problems like asthma, chronic fatigue, pulmonary hemorrhage among infants, skin allergies, headaches, nausea and even coughing just to name a few. When not properly attended to, these water damage health hazards can be very dangerous. In cases when the victim's immune system is severely weak, death can occur. Mold contamination is also dangerous to infants, and even to your pets.

Practice the necessary precautions above to help reduce moisture inside your homes. We've already lost a big amount of money and a number of properties to water damage. Let us not lose our good health.
