Chris Watt ,ND Prospect For Offensive Guard
by Warren Wong, War
Chris Watt has recently committed to the Fighting Irish for the 2009 football season. He is still attending high school at Glenbard West and is a four star offensive guard. At 6 foot, three inches and weighing 280 pounds he admits that it is still necessary to work out on a frequent basis. He says that no matter how often you lift weights you will still feel fatigue in your muscles. Chris is the younger brother of Kevin Watt, a well-known football player in his own right. During Chris junior year in 2007, he was named the all conference and all area player by head coach Chad Hewlett.

Watt inspected all his offers and visited the colleges that wanted him to join their roster. In July he did make the commitment to Notre Dame. He wanted to be thorough in ensuring he made the right choice and visited fifteen schools before making his final decision. He had many discussions with coaches and explored all of his options. This shows that he is very dedicated in making sure he accepted the best university and that he has good prospects for his future as a football player.

Watt has been described as one of the best players in the country. His strengths have been listed as being aggressive and tenacious. He does have great drive blocking skills, but one of his weaknesses is that he does have a nasty streak. As a run blocker, he is one of the best run blockers in the Midwest. He compares favourably with the linemen on all college football teams. In pass pro and in space, he plays well, but when playing against bigger opponents, he tends to allow defenders into his chest. This could give him potential problems, but with practice he will certainly improve. For a big player, he does have amazing speed and agility.

He can bench press 325 pounds. He has a 26-inch vertical jump and squats 450. When talking of his own style of play, Watt said that he is aggressive at the point of contact. He finishes blocks really well and is very competitive. In his workouts, which he does four or five times every week, he always works to his ability to improve. He wants to get bigger and faster while working on his overall technique and his pass blocking.

With his academics, Watt is an exceptional student with a grade point average of 4.3 in honours classes. He plans to take the ACT in April. With the ratings he has received and the offers from the many colleges, there is no doubt that all eyes will be on him even during this year watching to see if he has improved. Knowing where he will be going in the 2009 season will take some pressure off him during his final year allowing him time to concentrate on his game and his studies. When he does attend Notre Dame, fans will eagerly anticipate seeing him play in the games and around the campus.
