Migraine Help - Does Hypnosis Really Work?
by Fleur Moir-jones, Fle
There is an abundance of medical evidence and studies that prove that pain can be controlled through the use of hypnosis. However, depending on the type of pain involved determines the success of the hypnosis treatment. Acute pain CAN be tamed effectively by hypnosis e.g. migraine headaches.
A sufferers perception of pain is greatly reduced when undergoing hypnosis - anxiety and fear are diluted. In essence, if the person is not concerned by pain then it ceases to be a controlling influence at that moment in a persons life. Migraine hypnosis, doctors have discovered, is a perfect example of this.
It has been determined through research that hypnosis is universally successful as a pain management tool. It is important before reading further to understand that hypnosis is not a cure. Undergoing migraine hypnosis is not going to cure you of a possible tumor causing your migraines. Hypnosis is not a cure, but it is effective treatment and in the event that a tumor is causing your migraines, is a wonderful compliment to other treatments without side effects.
Forgive me for stating the obvious but the best way to remove the pain of a migraine is to remove the migraine itself. Unfortunately, there is no surgical procedure or drugs available to remove these horrendous headaches for good. At present a migraine sufferer can only treat the symptoms and hope to "catch them" at the beginning of an attack.
Hypnosis and its incredible effect as a pain reduction tool has long been an area of confusion, according to some scientific publications. Despite the fact hypnosis is widely recognised as a successful way to reduce pain it is unclear as to exactly how it works. It is thought that whilst experiencing pain, a person can actually overcome the sensations whilst under the influence of hypnosis and strong suggestion. The pain becomes less centralised and you can almost make it move away from you thus being able to cope with it.
In addition to using migraine hypnosis, you can use hypnosis for many other things. One of the positive benefits of hypnosis is there are no side effects.
Pain medication prescribed for migraines can lead people to feel even worse. The pain may be managed through medication, but the medication can leave you feeling dizzy, nauseated, cause lack of sleep and irritability. These are things you experience with migraines anyway and while the pain can be crippling, so can your lack of sanity from loss of sleep.
Having a bad reaction to prescribed medications for migraine is not uncommon. If this has been your experience you may like to give hypnosis some serious consideration.
If you are experiencing migraines and feel like nothing has helped, talk to your doctor about migraine hypnosis as an alternative treatment. He or she may be able to suggest a reputable hypnotist in your area and with the doctor's recommendation for a specialist treatment, your insurance will probably pay all or a portion of the cost of going to a hypnotist.
There is no reason to continue living with the kind of pain migraines create when there is a viable alternative that is effective without side effects. Talk to your doctor about migraine hypnosis today.
