First you must know that Hispanics differ from one generation to the next. So when you meet Hispanics know that not all of them speak spanish and not all are the same culturally.
So far in the United States you will find first, second and third generation Hispanics. You will discover something different with each generation.
In no way is one generation better than the other they just have differences. From the outside looking in it may seem as if one generation is better than the other but that is not true.
1st generation Hispanics are those that are in a different country than the one they were born in. In the United States most of the Hispanics come from Mexico, that is not a secret. Others also come from Central America, Cuba, El Salvador just to name a couple more countries. Family is important in this generation. The godfather is a very 1st generation movie.
A second generation Hispanic is a person who can speak two languages, often english and spanish. They speak spanish with their parents and family members but at school and work they speak english to co-workers and classmates. They appreciate their culture.
Third generation Hispanics have been in the American culture so long that they have embraced it. They were born in America and they speak english and have no intention on learning spanish. They have not picked up their culture from their parents and have no desire to. They are busy people.
You know you have met a third generation Hispanic because they are the ones that have a lot of Anglo friends. They are also starting to go to college and are landing office jobs. They are looking for high paying jobs as well.
Since Hispanics are relational people see if you can relate to the ones you already know. See if you can tell if they are first, second or third generation Hispanic. Ask them about their family background, you can pick up on them fairly quickly by doing so.
