Building Relationships And List Building Is Where You Should Start
by Stu Mclaren, Stu
Whenever you are starting a business, generating revenue is always in the back of your mind. Often times I get asked, if you don't have a large amount of money to draw from in the beginning to start your business, what are some cost efficient ways to get started?
Everyone's situation is different, so there is no easy answer or clear cut method. In this article I will give you insights and ideas as I built my business when I was deep in student debt.
I just graduated university and marketing products was something that I did not have any experience with. I did not have any money and I did not have any contact so what that presented is a humongous opportunity to be extremely creative and that is what you really have to start tapping into because I do not know about you, but I am most creative when I am most desperate and that is a good thing.
Getting started will always present obstacles, which can be overcome creatively. Getting people's attention, building relationships, creating products and marketing those products can be completed by finding creative ways to do them.
Building momentum from your creativity is the key to this scenario. When you are first starting out you have to really think about what is the most important aspect to you at that time. Generating revenue? Building a list? Creating and marketing your products?
Focus on what is important at this particular point in your career. Maximize that area by utilizing your creativity. Of course revenue was important to me when I was first starting, but not the most important as building a long term profitable business.
Long-term gains were more important than early profits, so I sacrificed them. The method I did to do this was giving my time in exchange for products, JV opportunities, services, all different kinds of things.
Time is what I did have, so I used that to its full potential. I volunteered at numerous events, I did marketing for people, I wrote for people. Anything I could do to help build relationships with key people I did.
So in the beginning, you have to work a little bit harder and you have got to be a little bit more creative in order to get what it is that you want, but you got to know exactly what it is that you want.
Spinning in circles is not what you want to end up doing, but will if you don't focus your attention. Get very clear on what your want your business to do and need to do. Is genereating revenue upmost importance? Yes, then you need to dig deep and find those creative means to do that in a short period of time.
If you are not so much concerned about generating revenue immediately but you are more interested in developing relationships for long-term profitability, then you want to focus on creative ways to connect with people, to build those relationships and to get to know others.
Everything really boils down to what you want to be focused on at the start. Building your list may be important to you, so find creative ways to build that list and focus on that. Building relationships and getting building your list is important to start off with in my opinon, because that is what will carry you on in the future.
When starting your business off on a tight budget, you really have to focus down into what you are looking to do and accomplish. Secondly, really tap into your creativity, it will move you beyond your excuse of not having money to do something and help you find alternative solutions to get by. It may take a little longer or seem different, but once you find your creative side the end is limitless.
