The Ravaging Beauty Of Transylvania
by Elmo Populous, Elm
Transylvania has been in some ways burdened by its links to the notorious legend of Dracula. This beautiful region of Romania has much more to offer so do not be put off by such associations. It is a region full of history and character, surrounded by the dramatic and awe inspiring views of the Carpathian mountain range.

Bran is a friendly town based at the foot of the breathtaking Bucegi Mountains. The myths associating its castle with Dracula may have been dismissed but the association is understandable due to the castle's sinister presence. The castle was built in 1377 by the Saxons of Bra'ov to protect the main route into Wallachia. Its many tiers of towers and battlements look striking against the mountain surroundings. The interior is labyrinthine, with multiple hidden stairs, nooks and chambers. For a more authentic experience than Bran, investigate nearby R??nov with its imposing hilltop fortress and awesome views.

Sibiu is another Transylvanian city worth exploring and was awarded the title of the European Capital of Culture in 2007. Walk around and enjoy the views of the ancient streets and gabled houses. Spend a day at the open-air Muzeul Astra, which offers intriguing insights into rural life, with authentically furnished houses, churches and mills. You can even visit a traditional inn serving local food and drink.

However, for many, the real attraction is not the towns but the magnificent Carpathian Mountains. The Carpathians provide Europe's cheapest skiing in winter and fantastic hiking during the summer. When organising a skiing holiday, make sure you are fully prepared by arranging some ski travel insurance. Transylvania also has a myriad of caves, meadows, forests and valleys to explore. Romania has the largest wolf and brown bear population in Europe and it is possible to have guided walks through the forests to track these now rare creatures. The mesmerising natural landscapes provide the best examples of how Transylvania is anything but just a note in vampire folklore.

There are several ways to get to the Transylvania region but an option worth pursuing is to get a budget flight to Budapest and then travel to Romania by land, as this is relatively straightforward. Otherwise most airlines serve Bucharest's Otopeni airport.
