Water Damage - The Silent And Hidden Enemy In Your Kitchen
by Jamie Hanson, Jam
Finding the problem's source

You can easily find out what needs to be repaired by searching for areas inside and outside your home where water is seeping through or accumulating. Oftentimes water damage in basements are easier to spot and fix than in other areas of the house because there is less furniture and clutter to rummage through in the basement. Once the source of water damage has been found, then repairs should be made immediately.

Below are four of the most likely places where water damage can occur. Check these areas thoroughly every few months to prevent costly damages and keep your kitchen in fine condition.

The Dishwasher

If the dishwasher fails to empty completely, check for a clogged main filter and clear it at once. When water overflows from the sink, it is usually brought about by back-ups due to a blocked drain line. Drain lines need to be cleared of blockages regularly. Check under the dishwasher base for water accumulation. If any leak is present, check for a loosely-fitting joint or a damaged hose and apply the necessary repair. Also check under the sink for leaks in the dishwasher hose and fix if needed. You will also want to use heavy-duty steel-braided hoses for your dishwasher.

The Refrigerator

Although it may be hard to access, checking the area behind the refrigerator will reduce water damage. The accumulation of excess water behind the refrigerator is an indication of a problem and should not be ignored, particularly if mildew is present. Trace the problem source immediately. If the water comes from the refrigerator, try to fix it or call a technician.

The sink and countertop

The sink and countertop are the most watered areas in your house besides the bathroom. Remove the trash can and other stuff from under the sink and check regularly for any leaks. Dripping water from the trap under the sink indicates either an unsealed joint or a clogged up drain and should be fixed. A leaky faucet shouldn't likewise be ignored.

Don't ignore the cracked tiles and missing grout on the countertop. Repair it to prevent water from further permeating beneath the tiles. Discolored walls and floors surrounding pipes are signs of an internal leak that must be stopped to avoid further damage.

Check the indoor air quality

When repairing water damage, be sure to eliminate the mold that came in its wake. After the problems are fixed, it will be hard to determine if the water damage has negatively affected the quality of your indoor air. This should not be allowed as this can trigger some respiratory health problems. A good air purifier can partially solve the issue. However, you should seek professional help to determine if the air quality inside your house is safe for inhalation. If the air quality doesn't pass the safety level test, the professional can recommend measures for you to take to bring it back to a safe level.
