Wool Suits Guide
by Victor Santerino, Vic
Wool is the most common material used to make suits, but not all wool suits are created equal. These types of suits can come in tweed, herringbone, flannel, and worsted wool models. Materials differ in both quality and thickness so choose carefully.

High quality suits are spun at a much higher speed than lower quality suit. Designers tell us what the quality is by giving us a number system ranging from 100 to 200. The higher the quality the higher the number. Suits that are spun at speeds above 150 are generally reserved for luxury suits.

The thickest most durable type of wool used in suit creation is tweed. Tweed suits are made from a woolen yarn and usually come in checkered patterns. This type of material has a coarse feel to it and is perfect for the man looking for a long term winter suit.

The herringbone suit is a great year round suit. This suit is heavier than worsted models yet lighter than tweed models and comes in a fashionable zig zag pattern.

Flannel suits are a fantastic addition to the wool suit lineup. These suits are thicker than worsted and herringbone models and are great for the winter. The flannel suit can be spun from both worsted wool and woolen yarn which gives the designer greater freedom in creating the weight of the suit.

Worsted wool is the lightest type of wool fabric on the market. Suits made from worsted wool are ideal for summer use. Many men choose to buy this type of suit as a year round suit as well. These men will add a trench coat to keep warm while outside. Buy this suit if you are looking for something comfortable to wear around the office.

Now that you know the differences between wool suits your next purchase should provide you with the most appropriate material for your situation. Remember to consider when and where you will be wearing your new suit before making any type of purchase.
