Homemade Compost Preparation Methods
by Russ Snapper, Rus
Compost can be considered as a conditioner for the soil than taking it as a fertilizer. Too much of compost cannot be added to the soil. Pre-made compost can be purchased from the shops, but it is quite simple to prepare homemade compost.

The green materials that are used for preparation of compost are rich in nitrogen and brown materials in carbon. The same amount or the equal ratio of the nitrogen and the carbon materials will work out efficiently in preparing good compost. The last and the important ingredient that has to be used for the compost preparation is the water.

The process of preparation of the homemade compost may differ, but it has to be started with the brown matter. The various brown matters that are available readily in many of the houses are leaves, some of the materials that are generally found in the outside of the yard and the grass clippings.

After gathering all the materials of brown matter, then the green materials should be accumulated for the purpose of the second layer. Some of the green materials that are available in many of the kitchens are shells of pecan, shells of the sunflower seed, coffee filter and the coffee grounds and peels of fruits and vegetables.

For the purpose of aeration, another layer of the course materials like the straw or the hay has to be taken.

After obtaining all the above three layers, a small amount of the moisture has to be added. The process has to be repeated many times. After a period of two months, homemade compost will be ready.

Thus this homemade compost is a fertilizer of natural type and hence can be used safely in the garden for a good growth of all the plants.

The amount of compost that has to be prepared depends on the size of the garden. If it is a small indoor garden, then a small quantity of compost will be more than sufficient. For the requirement of the larger quantities of compost, the same has to be done by accumulating the compost in a bin.

It is better to prepare the own compost which will be of very natural rather than spending the money to get it from the shops which may not be genuine in some cases and spoil the plants in the garden. By this way, the country is also saved environmentally.
