Australia Medical Recruitment Shortfall
by Maury Klein, Mau
During the current world economic crisis, the developed nations of the world are taking many steps to protect both their local economies and the jobs of their citizens. A high unemployment rate, means lower consumer confidence and a decrease in spending. No government wants their economic figures to reduce on previous years, so they are doing what they can to encourage consumer spending and market activity.
The average person will only continue spending at current or previous high rates if they are first of all obviously employed, and more so if they are confident in their job security. Some countries in recent weeks have gone to the level of limiting skilled worker migration to their countries, to keep more jobs available for their current citizens.
One example of this is in Australia, a country famous for welcoming well trained workers from other countries to help fill positions in their workforce where shortages often occur. They have reduced the amount of new positions in many industries that can be offered to skilled immigrants.
There are exceptions to this rule though, where labour shortages will always exist. One example of this is the medical industry. Hospitals are often reported as being short staffed and with long training periods, specific niches in the industry and the high stress of many medical jobs, it is hard to fill shortages from the local population quickly. This is where skilled immigrants make up the shortfall in the health care industry.
It is a globally recognised phenomenon that more and more of the world's population are moving from rural areas into the city. Australia is no exception to this rule. There are many well documented effects of this situation, such as cities becoming overcrowded, higher pollution rates, increased costs in cities and so on. But there is also the drain on the amount of skilled workers in many industries in rural areas. Again, the health care industry is one that struggles to maintain suitable levels of both qualified medical professionals, nurses and more.
This provides a great opportunity for health care workers from developing countries who wish to migrate to Australia with a great opportunity to both earn more money and experience a rich cultural experience.
The Australian government is also trying to lure medical workers out of the cities into rural areas with tax breaks and other incentives for those accepting rural medical positions.
There are websites you can visit that specifically target medical jobs for doctors seeking employment or locum positions all across Australia. With lots of medical employment always available, the Australian outback is an attractive place to further your medical career or experience the different lifestyle of a rural medical position.
