Greenhouses - A History

Greenhouses - A History
When we look at our greenhouses do we ever think where they came from? Or even think about who invented these amazing growing spaces? Well let's take a look at the history of the greenhouse and what has changed over the years. Many years ago when the world was still inhibited by the Romans, the roman emperor Tiberius was prescribed the cucumber once a day as a medical treatment. So this is where the idea for a controlled growing room came from. One could say that this was the start of the race to build the ultimate greenhouse. The Romans succeeded to build these controlled-room houses to produce the cucumber all year round.
But it was not till the Italians built the first real greenhouse in the 16th century that we could really speak of the beginnings of our greenhouses today. This Italian greenhouse was called giardini botanici (botanical gardens). The success of these received notice by some Dutch growers, and soon the concept greenhouse was also being built in the Netherlands. And of course it wasn't before long that the English got wind of this new way of growing and well there we have it. Then the first real greenhouse parks started to develop, even if this was on a very small scale. However, the Italian concept had some drawbacks and was hard to work with.
Many times we hear the name Jules Charles. This man was a French botanist and many people credit him for the first greenhouses built. Although he did not come up with the greenhouse idea, he did perfect them when he was living in Leiden Holland. But what do we use our everyday run-of-the-mill greenhouse for these days?
Well many people have found joy in growing their own vegetables and would like to do so if possible almost all year. But of course it does not stop at a simple vegetable anymore. The time that the Romans only used these houses for the cucumber are over. These days? people are more demanding and more persistent than the early day growers and their needs. This is why Gabriel Ash has the best and most diverse greenhouses known to man today.
