London is the capital of England and the world's ninth greatest metropolis. It has a rich history that spans nearly 2000 years, which started with the arrival of the Romans soon after their invasion of Britain in AD43.London is situated on the banks of the river Thames, in the south east of England.
In 1863, rising traffic congestion on roads in town centre London led to the construction of the world's leading metro system, the London Underground.The conurbation was bombed badly amid the 2nd world war and multitudinous lives were lost. After the war, many buildings in the city had to be rebuilt.Following World War II, immigration transformed London into one of the greater racially and culturally diverse places in Europe. Immigration was not always smooth, as there were major race riots in Notting Hill and Brixton, but intergration was certainly smoother than in other English regions.
As it is the capital of England, London boasts the best museums in the country. One of the better is the Science Museum, which is in South Kensington. The museum was established in 1857 and has over 300 000 exhibits, including Puffing Billy and Stephenson's Rocket.The urban place has a wealth of glorious galleries too, including the National Portrait Gallery.
London is reputable for its shopping, so you will spot everything from quirky independent stores and markets, to designer stores.One of the city's larger famous stores is Selfridges, which is on Oxford Street. It was rudimentary opened in 1909 by Harry Selfridge, who wanted to make shopping celebration rather than a chore. He succeeded and the store now has four other branches in diverse places round the UK.
London has well known night-life, which we are unquestioning that everyone will find thrilling. From sensational restaurants, to exclusive clubs and bars, there is something for everyone in London.One of the largest noteworthy clubs is the Embassy, which is a private members club on dated Burlington Street. The club is quite expensive, but it is abundant of celebrities and wonderful for star spotting. As well as this, it serves famous food by Michelin award winner Garry Hollihead.
As it is these a mammoth field, London is very easy to get to. In fact, it is well connected by rail and boasts some big railway stations, including London Bridge, London Victoria, London Euston and Liverpool Street. As well as this, the metropolitan area also has three major airports, Heathrow; Stanstead and Luton.Driving in London can be tricky due to the congestion charge, but the urban place has a splendid underground and bus network to help members of public get around.
