This was no last second comeback or triple overtime nail biter. The Beavers were up by 21 at the half! I repeat 21 at the half! As I watch this I thought to myself what did the Trojans lay down and die?
There is always a reason for upsets but this seems to be an insane one. They were running the ball all over this ferocious defense. They have a tiny running back named Jacquizz Rogers. Who?? He had over 180 yards rushing and two touchdowns!
Sometimes it appeared to be fate for the Beavers as they basically had a tipped ball go right to their receiver instead of the defense, this lead to their third touchdown before the half as time was ticking out.
The Trojans ending up trying to comeback but it was too late. The Beavers had already stolen the game with an interception in the fourth quarter. Pete Carroll basically admitted he was outplayed. Maybe he didn't game plan for Mighty Mouse the running back.
Despite this Mark Sanchez, quarterback of the Trojans still had 3 touchdowns and didn't play a horrible game. He only had one interception. Their defense and running game just sputtered out before they could jump-start it.
I believe this loss will drop the Trojans to at least 11th or 12th in the rankings. They will not be playing for a national championship since they have such an easy schedule the rest of the way. I think Notre Dame could win most of the games left on the Trojan's schedule. Even if they win the rest of their games the voting committee is almost obligated to put in someone with a tougher conference. Even the Big Ten might be tougher at this point. One announcer at the USC game the week before had been saying this was "the best USC team (he'd) ever seen". He won't be repeating those words this year.
We also won't be seeing another typical USC Quarterback win the Heisman.
The PAC-10 is horrible this year and will not send any team to the National Championship. It is most likely going to be a Big 12 and a SEC team in the Big Game and you can quote me on that.
For starters, the Oregon State Beavers would really have been the first of some teams to have got the ignominy of being called a pass-first offense team. For most of the season, the Beavers played with the same set combination, which quite did not give them any perceptible success. Of course, it was the time for a change. It came, and how did it impact the fortunes of Beavers!
The first aspect of the Beavers? strategic planning was to have additional H-Backs. This will increase the possibility of Beavers scoring more touchdowns. Early days yet, but the Beavers have already scored two touchdowns from short yard plays. Brady Camp and Joe Halahuni, two senior receivers scored the touchdowns. It may not be a good enough testimony to prove that this strategy is a hit, for which the wait continues until the next season.
What about the kicker Justin Kahut? He seems to be a player with exceptional talent, but his consistency needs some dressing down. Even in the game against the Oregon, he missed a kick from the 21-meter margin. The score line was reading 7-17 against the Beavers. A score there would surely have motivated the Beavers to move ahead. Justin did his bit of good turn in earlier games, but how long can he go on with this kind of inconsistency? Importantly, does he have the belief of his teammates? These are questions that need immediate and serious addressing.
December seems to be an off month for the Beavers what with not a lot of games scheduled for them. This should be best used by the management to assemble their best players after rest. This would mean Quizz Rodgers can come back from his shoulder injury. And the highly reputed Stephen Paea, who would possibly need some more time to recover from his injury! With these additions, surely the Beavers would be a bolstered unit.
Any free time on hands would mean the management gets time to recruit new talent. This is where the Beavers have made good headway. They have lined up 17 probabilities to join their team, and one look at them would be enough to say that the Beavers? recruitment coordinators have been doing their jobs well. This really is the time when possible gaps should be plugged, and looking at the efforts of Beavers, more than a step has been taken.
Had it been for better strategy and a good choice of players, Beavers could still have ended up higher than what they did last season. It must be said that what is gone has gone. Looking ahead, Beavers surely look in good shape to make an impact next season.
