Keeping Your Carpet Mold Free
by Rachel Yoshida, Rac
When buying a home, one of its features that a prospective homebuyer looks for is either hardwood flooring or carpet. For those who do not like hardwood flooring because of the chance that it can get scratched or because of the cold floor feeling, carpet is the choice. Carpet can make any home look warm and inviting. It is perfect for families with young kids, who can hurt themselves much more with a hard floor than a soft, cushioned one.

Although appealing to the eye, one of the biggest problems with carpet is upkeep. Carpets that are lighter in color, such as beige or gray, are even tougher to keep clean. A dirty carpet can be caused by anything: a piece of chicken that fell from your plate or a shoe that appears to be clean but has been exposed to the outside world. It is even harder for families with kids and pets to maintain a spotless carpet. Some kind of debris is bound to get onto the carpet.

An important factor to consider is not only the outward appearance of your carpet but also the well being of it underneath the surface. There are things that can be going on underneath that are not visible to the naked eye. Remember that glass of water that toppled over the end table and onto your carpet? If you did not clean that spill up properly, there is a good chance that mold has grown. In addition to mold, there are allergens and dust mites that can accumulate.

Keeping your carpet clean by vacuuming is the best thing to do in keeping your home free of allergens and for your carpet's 'life'. Find time to vacuum everyday. Doing a once-over in every room in your home is more important than doing a very thorough vacuuming at the end of each week. This gives the dirt, dust, and other allergy-causing things to penetrate the deepest roots of your carpet.

If your carpet looks horrendous or you are suffering from allergies, then consider washing the carpets. Most carpet cleaning services offer fairly inexpensive rates, starting at just $20 per room. If you would rather do the arduous task yourself, then there are certain steps you need to take. First, use a pre-wash treatment on all your tough stains.

Only use cleaning agents that are designed specifically for carpets and not for other areas of the home. Using a cleaning solution that is not made specifically made for carpets can damage not only your carpet but also your cleaning machine. Avoid over saturating your carpet with water. Follow directions and use only the recommended amount. This will prevent mold from developing and will allow quicker drying time.
