Having Water For Emergencies Is Smart Planning
by Rachel Yoshida, Rac
There a quite a few programs on television these days that show exactly what it is like to be faced with surviving on your own. These shows detail some very real situations that you might not ever be subject to surviving in, but many situations might be far easier to find yourself in than you might think. Even if we are never stranded in the Sahara desert, there are times and places where we might end up that we never dreamed of.

As Americans we travel by car to somewhere almost everyday. It could be that we have to commute from the countryside into the city to get to work on a daily basis. We might find ourselves traveling alone or with our family on a weekend trip to visit friends or relatives a few hundred miles away. We think of these things as routine and never really think that we could become stranded for very long on the side of the road.

Just imagine that you are not on the side of the road. What if you have been stranded in a snowstorm where no one could see you or get to you for several days or even longer? Some people have found themselves in these very situations where their cars ran off the road and they were injured and could not make their way to a road. Being trapped in a vehicle with no food or water and injured is no laughing matter. We can survive many days without food, but water is another matter.

This is one reason that even if you are not going to be traveling far, you need to be sure and have a supply of water with you. Keeping a gallon of water in the vehicle could mean the difference between life and death. The car is not the only place where you need to keep a supply of water in jugs or bottles.

During things like hurricanes or floods, many times the water supplies to our homes will be disrupted and the water is cut off for extended periods of time. Keeping several gallons of water stored in the home can ensure you will have water to get by on for at least a while. During a natural disaster, it is entirely possible that you could be trapped in the home just as many people have been before. We never realize how much water means to us until we do not have it. Being prepared with water is just a smart thing to do.
