Not all residences have been built with basements. They are a much desired feature, but not all homes have them. Many homes are less appealing because they have that nasty dirt floored beneath the house we named a crawl space. In a lot of homes it can be unbearably shallow and more often than not, you literally have to crawl when under your house. Occasionally these crawl spaces are strung with lights, but in many older dwelling places they have not been added. A person with a fear of tight places might be puzzled why someone would ever find it necessary to get in there anyway, but there are many different reasons. Occasionally when you need to go under there and determine if there may be standing water in there. This is a more annoying problem than you may realize, especially with aging dwelling places whose foundations might not be as waterproof as they used to be.

There are vents that might be present near the bottom of the foundation that may automatically open and close to get moisture under your living space to dry out. Older homes normally do not have this kind of vent, but you might need to get some. They are not that expensive and are not that hard to put in. When there is always a vast amount of dampness or visible water under a home, it could cause the wood to begin rotting and cause structural damage. This will probably be the first reason to examine in the crawl space.

The next circumstance is every bit as hazardous as the standing water and moisture. Leaking water lines are also something that could make water stand under a building. Your main water line goes into a residence from there. In buildings with aged plumbing, rust damage and leaking areas can develop more frequently. Even in new plumbing, leaks may happen if the water pipes were put in shoddily.

Anytime water is leaking or spewing and getting on wood, there is potential for water damage and it will take place more rapidly and with less water than you might know. Under the building is also where your outside water faucets and the beginning of your sewer lines are placed. The spigots may not be much of a danger, but a bad sewer pipe coming out of your house certainly might be. It can create a terribly dirty, unsanitary, and extremely nauseating situation fast!

Any water problem under the building must be remedied as fast as it can be. You could not imagine it is really harming anything if there is water under there, but it will be hurting a lot more than you think.
