Lottery Odds And Lottery Scams
by Daniel Millions, Dan
Nearly all people play the lottery in the hopes that they will win a huge amount and be able to retire luxuriously twenty or thirty years early. The chances of this happening for an individual are astronomical, and it is impractical for one to actually plan their life around a win. Mathematically, you can determine the odds of winning a lottery by using a formula. For example, if there are fifty numbers to choose from, and you must choose five, the chances of designing a winning ticket are 1:2,118,760.

This number is derived from the formula n (n-r) r, where n is the number of available choices, r is the number of choices you must pick, and the exclamation point is the factorial symbol. Therefore, in the above example, the expression would be evaluated as 50 (50-5) 5, which comes out as 2,118,760. Lottery players can apply this simple formula to different games to find out which one has the best odds, although many people do not see one in five million as being that much different from one in one million.

Probabilities of winning are increased when a full match is not required to win. Most large lotteries offer prizes for matching several of the numbers, such as a six number lottery paying out sums for choosing four or five numbers correct. The UK National Lottery awards amounts as low as ten euros for matching half the numbers. Other factors that contribute to a certain game's odds include whether or not numbers can be repeated, how many winning numbers are drawn, and if order is significant.

Those who do not like buying lottery tickets can play for free. While there are virtually no real live free lotto vendors, there are plenty of ways to obtain no-cost entries online. Essentially, you are trading your personal information and advertising viewing for tickets. Of course, the prizes of these lotteries are slimmer than paid ones, and the odds are not much better either. In fact, it is hard to determine if a website is fixed or not (many probably are). However, there is still a chance of winning, so it makes sense to some to participate as much as possible.

Being that there is so much to gain from a lottery, there are always scam artists who try to fraud the lotto. A direct way to assure you win is to tamper with the machines that draw the balls. This is done by tampering with the balls in a machine, usually with the help of a lottery employee.

One famous scam occurred in Maryland in 1979, when lottery officials injected all balls, except four and six, with a liquid to weigh them down. The machine chose three balls, and because fours and sixes were the lightest, they were always chosen. Although the scammers had to buy many tickets with combinations of fours and sixes to win, the plan technically worked, even though the perpetrators were discovered shortly after.

Another scam that many people worldwide have received is a notice of winning a lottery they did not enter. Fake letters come in both email and regular mail, but they both have the same goal: Entice the receiver to send in money to release the funds from holding. Avoiding this type of scam is easy; just do not respond to a notice for a lottery you know you did not enter.
