Your Must Know Guide To Erectile Dysfunction
by Karin Manning, Kar
Some men have temporary erection problem, but that never means they are suffering from erectile dysfunction. A problem can be termed as erectile dysfunction if it happens regularly. This condition may not persist every time a man wants to indulge in sex, but does occur repeatedly and over a period of time.

The two terms impotence and erectile dysfunction though mean the same thing but the correct term is erectile dysfunction as impotence could also mean anxiety, low self-esteem, fear of failure etc.

It is estimated that over 150 million men all around the world are suffering from erectile dysfunction, but the sad fact is only 10% are seeking treatment for this condition. The process of diagnosing this condition is pretty simple.

To evaluate ED, a complete physical examination with history about medical and lifestyle background is done. Generally, the patient is asked how long he has been having trouble with erections and when the problem started etc.

A complete sexual history is also checked regarding number of partners, hardness, stimulation and the duration of erections. The physician would also like to review medical history, surgery, and medications the patient takes.

First and foremost, it must be kept in mind that the patient is having ED and not any other form of sexual dysfunction as both are not the same. As men age, they might take longer to get an erection. Also, the erections may not be that hard as they used to be, or they may observe that it takes much longer to climax.

These are normal changes which are related to aging and one should not confuse them with ED which is not an inevitable process of aging. Also, if it occurs, is treatable.

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by any disorder which interferes with physical sequential events that are needed to produce an erection. Like any condition that prevents passage of blood to the penis during sexual activity or stimulation.

Some health conditions like heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure can also lead to ED. Some medications used to treat high blood pressure, allergies, heart disease, depression, eating disorders, anxiety and ulcers may also lead to ED as a side effect. That is why it is pertinent to follow advice of doctor while taking medication as directed.

Currently, various treatment options are available for erectile dysfunction. They are PDE5 inhibitors, injection therapy, other oral prescription medicine, vacuum devices, surgical implants, herbal or over-the-counter medications. Along with all these options, it is also advisable to make changes in life styles. The patient must stop smoking, should not drink too much, keep his weight under control and do regular exercises.

It can be said that erectile dysfunction is a condition which can be cured as the causes are mostly psychological rather then physical. With changes in lifestyle and habits along with regular exercise, one can come on top of this disease.

It is absolutely essential that you not "put up" with your impotence. Do something about it before it affects your relationships.
