Massa Marittima In Maremma Tuscany
by Giulio Detti, Giu
Massa Marittima is a small commune in Grossseto province in the Italian region of Tuscany. The place is so peaceful and very simple such that the serenity of the place is appealing to the senses and emotions. The place is wrapped in historical sentiments attributed to its rich past. The people are so warm and congenial. They also take pride in their customs, passions and traditions which are conservatively practiced ever since.

Sitting on top of a hill, the town rests 380meters above the Tyrrehenian Sea and Pecoa River which remarkably allows the sunset to paint color and nostalgia to the town's historical monuments and landmarks.

As nostalgic as it is, the medieval town is abundant with artistic proofs that make it an unforgettable central tourist attraction. Like other Tuscan regions, Massa Marittima also bears Etruscan origins. Architectural monuments tracing from Etruscan history in the 11th century are very much evident in the town which made the town relatively involved with diocesan activities. The rich period of 13th and 14th century left traces to this day of pyramite, copper and silver mines.

The town of Massa Marittima has two cities namely the low or the old city, and the high or the new city. Romanesque buildings are found in the low city while structures in the high city are evidences of the 13th and 14th century architectural craftsmanship.

The town is famous for having the Palazzo Pretorio, a historical sight of the place, the Monteregio Castle of the 9th century Italy and the beautiful Cassero Senese. The town also has different churches named after saints such as those of Church of St. Francis, Church of St. Augustine, and Church of San Rocco. Cathedral of the 13th century of Romanesque influence and signature is also an attraction in the place.

Since the monuments cater to the public, one can only expect to see fine views to be witnessed from t above them. Fertile lands tilled for olives and corns as well as vines are best seen from the top of these monuments. You can almost feel the majestic horizon of the gulf of Follonica almost touching your cheek from atop these monuments.

Food in the town is an attraction also. Most of the dishes in this lovely town come from its own rich agricultural crops designed by Mother Nature for the place. A typical Tuscan recipe linked with the town's cooking ingenuity includes bruschette with olive oil, emmer, hare broad noodles, croutons and bean and chickpea soups. Tortelli marammani is a must too. A visit to the town without trying the local food will not seal your travel experience in the region, so the food is really a must-try. Massa Marittima's local dishes are sure winners for tourists who go up to this place.

For tourists who are into seeing mineral springs or different minerals and ironworks, they can definitely be found in Massa Marittima whose mines include copper and mercury. Iron and lignite mines are also present. You can also see olive oil mills and foundries in some areas of the town. With all the diverse attractions to see in this town, the place is so ideal for excursion.

Vacation rentals all across town are plenty for tourists to stay in one. The place is definitely brimming with so many enriching things to do and find out.
