When I recently fractured my ankle, I had a very nice doctor who was quite positive and hopeful, and as his patient, I left feeling the feeling that he had about my ability to recover. However, the second doctor I saw, was a miserable git who spend 10 minutes telling me how badly it was broken, how limited my chances of a full recovery would be, how it would surely re-break when I put my full weight on it and how much pain and discomfort I would have in the weeks to come. Guess what, I left feeling like he was feeling about my ability to recover. Not very hopeful at all.

I was actually pretty angry, because I knew how easily people can be influenced by a doctors words and although I didn't want to be influenced by what he had said, I knew I needed to prove that he was wrong. So I went to get a second opinion.

The third doctor said he was sure it was healing and would heal up fast. He said he wanted me to start putting weight on it. Right away. He said the plaster would be off in no time. I loved that doctor. I actually did, in the moment, totally and completely love him. His second opinion blew that crabby old doctor right out of my mind. Suddenly my hope returned. The sun reappeared from behind the cloud and I actually felt better.

And immediately in my mind I began reaffirming to myself all of the many ways in which I could heal myself. I began disputing that second doctors opinion in my mind with him. I decided he looked like a chicken and gave him a chicken face and wings. The in my mind, in his surgery, I told him what I thought of him and his silly ideas.

Thank goodness for the second opinion. It truly can give you another way of thinking.
