What is Asatru?

Asatru, also called Odinism, is a Nordic religion native to the Teutonic people. Asatru abounds in northern Europe and affects the everyday lives and rituals of its believers. It is an ancient polytheistic religion with no known founding date, but the modern movement began during the 1970s. An Icelandic sheep farmer and Asatru priest named Sveinbjorn Beinteinsson founded the revival movement. Small groups of believers are located in Iceland, Scandinavia, North America, Denmark, and Norway. The core beliefs center around four main deities -Odin, Thor, Freyr, and Freyja- and other minor gods. The old religion is often associated with the Vikings.
