My husband remodels buildings for a living. My profession is interior design. Our jobs allow us to occasionally work together to remodel. We concur that the remodeling of bathrooms is our least favorite job. There are many variables to consider when remodeling bathrooms, despite its relatively small size compared to most rooms in the house.
The remodeling of bathrooms can be a great inconvenience, as well as costly and time consuming for the home owner. This often can cause an unhappy customer. The other difficulty in the remodeling of bathrooms is that when you spend so much time in a room, like a bathroom, you tend to notices even miniscule flaws. With such cramped quarters, there are bound to be flaws with tile and grouting or painting, despite all efforts and skill of the craftsman. Still, this is hard for the customer to accept when the remodeling cost so much.
I have chosen when remodeling bathrooms to only work on projects that remodel the entire bathroom. Painting or wallpapering is much easier when not trying to work around existing fixtures. The final appearance is also much cleaner and more coordinated if everything is remodeled all at once. Totally gutting a bathroom may actually save you money as your workers will not be required to work around things already in place.
The number one thing I tell customers when remodeling bathrooms is to always overestimate the time taken by approximately a week. This alleviates frustrations for the customer when the project is not completed in time, and if it is, they will be more please. It is also a good idea for families to create a plan of bathroom use while the remodeling is going on. One bathroom being out of commission in a house is more than likely to change the family's routine. A plan will help the household function better during this transition time. It is amazing to encounter customers who believed that their bathroom will still be usable while remodeling bathrooms.
Remodeling bathrooms can be frustrating, time consuming, and annoying. However, your home's beauty and value is added to by a newly remodeled bathroom. These are often strong selling points for existing homes. Home value is also increased by the addition of bathrooms. Multiple bathrooms are useful not only in daily life, but also when one entertains guests.
