[C131]Car Breakdown And Recovery
by Mark Flanighan, Mar
In the UK, the snow has hit us again and if we just did not know, we all went out in our cars expecting to get to our destination just as quick as if it was a bright sunny day. Of course it is everyone's else's fault, that the roads grind to a halt, as vehicles breakdown and skid off the road, slowing the speed of traffic down to what it should have been without the troubles.Well when we get home and complain what an awful journey that is, spear a thought for the breakdown recovery guys who are still out there, trying to get motorists who have broken down back on their way, or those who have had an accident getting that car out of danger to another location or garage. It is easy to say they get paid for it and it is their choice, but you have to understand how dangerous this job can be. As cars drive too fast on slippery roads and try to avoid other road users, there are also stationary vehicles and in many case these are breakdown recovery trucks trying to help stricken motorists. You also have to remember that these breakdown recovery agents also have to get to call outs through the same traffic you are trying to get home in, if it has taken you and extra hour, it has added an hour to every call out for that breakdown recovery agent that day. Of course these guys are also employed on a roadside assistance contract also. This means they attend the motorist, but the contract does not include long distance recovery, just enough to get you to a local garage. But the main objective is to get that car owner back on the road, so these engineers find themselves bend over the bonnet, in dangerous, cold and wet conditions trying to get your car started again, or action a repair that will get your home under your own steam. It isn't just the roads that get clogged up in these cold and snowy times, but also the railways and the airports, that also find they cancelling trains and planes. This compounds the issues on the road, as coaches are put on, cars are rented, favours are pulled in and people insist they must get to their destination. This extra resource on already dangerous roads means the emergency services get stretched and that includes the breakdown recovery services, which answer calls on a first come first served basis. So if you are unlucky enough to be the last to call, you may be waiting for sometime until a breakdown recovery agent arrives.Roadside assistance although a cheaper policy to buy can sometimes put a bigger strain on the recovery agent, because instead to putting the car on the back of his recovery vehicle, he has to stay the duration, over the bonnet or under the car until he finds the fault and gets you on your way. This often can take more time than just simple recovery, especially if the fault is not found and the car needs recovered to the local garage anyway. So if the weather forecast states it will be snowing tomorrow, leave a bit earlier, take your time, drive slower and remember the emergency services that will helping those, who did not take this advice, including the breakdown recovery agents.
