Why The Carrot Beats The Stick
by Gary Mullen, Gar

The answer you gave may be very different depending upon your approach to life. It's obvious to state that those who treat others with respect and courtesy are bound to have more success with their communications than those who show no regard to their fellow man. And thus, this is where the old adage of the carrot and the stick comes into play.

To state an example of where the 'carrot' approach will always pay more dividends than the 'stick' approach we'll use the example of buying a gift from a store. If you're one of those people who have the courage to haggle you can often find some bargains will come your way. However, it's the approach to the haggle that will determine how successful you will be. If you were to march up to the assistant of the store and DEMAND a discount with an abrupt tone you are more than likely to be shown the door. But, with a lighter and more friendly approach you will be more likely to secure your unique discount.

Nobody wants to deal with someone they take a dislike to and the initial impression you make upon others will have an impact upon the outcome of your communication with them. Put yourself in their shoes. If someone was to approach you in an aggressive manner how would you deal with them? You probably wouldn't have as much time for them as someone who was a lot more pleasant to talk to. And, much research shows that it is harder to deny the demands of someone you have a good rapport with even if it does not comply with your wish!

So just remember the next time you want someone to pull out all the stops, no matter what the situation, you will get more from showing more decorum in your approach.
