Make Your Own Shaker Peg Rack
by Megan Cherry, Meg

It is actually quite easy to make your own Shaker peg rack you will only need some basic hand tools to make a simple one. The first thing you need to do is decide on the length that you would like your new peg rack it is a good idea to measure right on the wall using a piece of blue painters tape to mark on is a good idea if you change your mind later you can just peel it off no harm done to your wall. Standard peg spacing is 6 inches on center you may however space them to whatever suits your needs.

Will you be painting or staining your peg rack? Most people want to match the existing trim in their house, if you plan on painting you can use a good quality pine most home centers now carry a select grade of pine that is perfect for paining or even staining if your existing trim is pine. The most preferred type of wood seems to be Oak followed closely by Cherry. The benefit of using Oak is that it is readily available at most home centers in various lengths and widths this is the good part you can buy Oak in widths from 3.5 inches up to 9 inches pretty much at any home center most will even cut it to length for you. Cherry is a little harder to come by you may have to go to a millworks store to get it but again they will be happy to cut it to length for you.

Ok you have your rail it is cut to length and width know how do you plan on attaching it to the wall the simplest solution is to use a through screw that is covered by a ½ inch diameter wood plug these are readily available along with the pegs and can be stained or painted to match.

If you want an edge detail on your peg rack you will need a router if you do not have one check with a neighbor router with an edge detail bit is a fairly common tool it is also ok to leave the edge square in our coat rack store we have many request for a plain square edge detail.

Finishing you coat rack. I prefer to finish the coat rack prior to drilling and installing the pegs is much easier to paint or stain a flat board than try and paint around the pegs. The type of finish is up to you for a simple stain I like the Min Wax poly colors these have a stain and polyurethane mixed together you can apply several coat with a light sanding in-between. Once the stain is dry you can drill the holes and install the pegs use a forstner bit this will leave a very nice clean hole with out tearing out. Now you can install the pegs with good wood glue and put up your new Shaker peg rack.
