[C197]Card Games For Three
by Victor Epand, Vic
One of the older, more traditional games that children play is the wide variety of card games that are available. Children used to be able to access card games simply because adults had playing cards, and some simple version so adult games were devised to allow younger children to join in. Those families that didn't see cards as being ruinous to one's fortunes saw them as being a cheap way of gathering the whole family around and having a good game. Some games relied entirely on luck, in which case children could compete on an entirely level playing field; other games relied on skill and knowledge, which were clearly more advanced for the children, but there were also varieties of games devised which mixed the two, so that whilst a degree of skill was required, or at least beneficial, there was also a degree of luck, and this could play in the children's favour.

In addition to the normal standard packs of fifty two playing cards, comprised of the usual four suits of hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades, there were also children's equivalents created. Some of the more basic ones simply took the idea of fifty two cards divided into four families, but instead of calling them after abstract symbols, named them after families, with recognisable surnames, thirteen within each family.

This took a further step and the game of Happy Families takes this idea into a complete character based game, and the images have always been created to appeal to children. The faces and names are all easily identifiable, and children see the people as being more relevant that the symbols.

Today there is an even wide range of playing cards styles, sets and games, from simple Snap games where the object is to match up pairs of cards as they are dealt, to Trump cards which are like collector's packs, and allow children to use statistics that relate to either real items, such as planes or cars, or fictional characters' abilities, and play against other children's cards to determine who is more powerful. Trading cards have also become another popular spin-off today with children swapping and exchanging cards to build whole sets.

There are a variety of games on the market which now combine a deck of cards with a board game, Uno being one example which has been around for some time. The Uno cards are based on simple, easily recognizable symbols, with colours too, and the idea is to match up pairs, runs, sets or other scorable groups of cards and rid yourself of your hand to win.

Children enjoy card games not only because they are usually quick and simple to learn, easily portable, and have a simple appeal, but they are also reminiscent of the games their parents play, poker or bridge for example, and children like nothing better than copying or imitating the things their parents do.

Since most packs of cards or children's card games cost little more than two or three pounds, they can prove far better value for money long term than some of the more obvious mainstream games for children.

***************************
For many years playing cards was just something old men did, in seedy gamming rooms, but recently cards have once again become a popular thing to do when sitting around with friends at home, in the coffee shop or in a casino. Here I have listed some of my favorite games. Some of the games are very easy and take only minutes to learn and some can be very difficult to learn and may take a lifetime to learn.

List of Easiest Games to Study
1) War:
Here, all the cards are dealt out and each player, in turn, puts down a card from his pack. Note that since the deck in your hand faces the table, you do not see which card you are releasing. Once all the players have placed their respective card down, the highest card wins the round and takes all the cards that are on the table.

2) Who Lies Best?
Like to cheat and lie? Then, this card game will suit you fine because only the best liar wins. Honest? Pick another game for you will lose horribly here. To win, you must declare that you have a set of cards or a single one and then lay it down on the table. Either of the players can challenge you, and if they are right, you have to keep all the cards that have been placed down on the table. If they were wrong, they must do the same.

3) Blackjack:
Also commonly referred to as 21 because that magical number is what players strive to reach, this card game requires very little arithmetic and that too only basic adding that goes no higher than twenty-one.

4) Throw Down:
Here, the object is to get the full set of a particular number in your hand and then to throw the cards down. As soon as this happens, all the players must throw down their cards too. The loser is the one who is last. The number of cards to play with must match the number of players. If there are six players, remove all cards lower than nine so that you will have twenty four cards that make up six sets.

List of Most Difficult Games to Learn
1) Mandrake:
With extensive rules intertwined and conditioned to match different circumstances, Mandrake requires intense concentration as well as a highly tuned strategic outlook. All the cards are handed out, and the person with the 2 of Clubs starts. So far it is simple, but now it gets complex. The next player can either place an ace or a three, but these must be either of a different colour or if of the same colour then it must be accompanied by a trump card determined only for that round. The others can use this card or override it by crossing it with two Kings or a Queen and a Jack. There are many more rules, too many too mention here, so just pass over this game if anyone ever suggest teaching it to you.

2) Dragon Poker:
Dragon Poker is not totally unlike poker. Any of the different variations of poker can be used as the base for the game, but the general rules are very different. There are no official rules for dragon poker, they must be thought up and written down by the group of people you are playing with, and it is the duty of each player to memorize the rules, if you forget a rule it goes against you and if someone else does not remember a rule that can hurt you, do not worry you do not have to remind them. The best games have the most rules. An example of a rule can be if the date ends in an odd number and the dealer is wearing a shirt that the color of the shits spelling is an even number, then each player must pay the dealer 100 dollars. This rule can only be used once and whoever is the first to call out the rule during their deal gets it.

3) Tens Wins:
Requiring an even number of participants because they need to be paired up, the goal for each team is to win as many tens as they can. At first this does not seem laborious, but once you start playing, it gets too tiresome. You have a trump card that conquers all other cards except the exact number of it of a different colour, but this too can be trumped with another colour. In addition, you can use higher cards to create decoys by placing them facing down and declaring them as a ten of a certain colour.
