Promoting Your Jewelry Business In Your Hometown
by Ariana Cherry-shearer, Ari

When you have turned your jewelry-making hobby into a new small business, then one of the best places to begin your marketing campaign is your hometown. There are many markets and ways to begin advertising your creations in your local area. By word of mouth, some posters, and speaking with your small retail store representatives, you can begin building contacts right in your hometown.

One of the first ways to let everybody know that you are selling jewelry is to contact your local newspapers. Contact the small press in your area, and even some of the larger newspapers in surrounding cities. Either type up a press release explaining your business or have someone do it for you. You can also contact the newspaper to see if somebody might be interested in interviewing you for a story. One good contact to start with would be the features editor. Small town newspapers love a good story about people in their hometown-especially new business ventures or even local authors. Your local media is always looking for news stories. Other place you may try is possibly local news stations. Bring a few of your creations as gifts with business cards for some of the female news crew. This could be a terrific way to begin building contacts.

After alerting the media, then create some colorful flyers with pictures of your designs, contact information, and a link to your website if you have one. See if there is a place available to leave your business cards or make a little pocket on the flyer to hold your business cards as well. Place folders in high traffic areas where people are on a daily basis. Leave flyers at grocery stores, craft stores, laundry mats, daycare facilities, and even schools. Sometimes libraries will have a place for public flyers too.

Once newspapers have been contacted, and flyers have been placed in the area, then begin visiting some of the retail stores. Some of the best places to begin are craft shops or tourist areas. Call the stores to find out when the best time would be to speak with the manager. Make sure your outfit is presentable and professional. Try to have some designs on hand that you don't mind leaving with the manager and some business cards too. Some stores may have policy for monthly booth rent, or would like to earn a percentage of your earnings too. Work with the management on what deal would work best for you and your business.

The last way to spread the news about your jewelry business is to talk to as many people as you can! Tell all of your family and friends that you are selling jewelry. Give some of your jewelry as "free gifts" to friends and family who can wear your designs to work or while they are out running errands. Hand them a few or your business cards so they can spread the word. If your child attends school, let them wear some of your bracelets or make sure that other parents know that you are in the jewelry making business. Offer to make some for gift bags at parties and have your business cards with them. Schools and play areas are a great way to speak with other mothers and women who love jewelry. Once some women know about your designs, then a jewelry party can be organized. Let everybody invite a friend and offer free gifts for those who bring friends.

While starting any new business may take some time, the best place to always begin is right at home. When contacts have been established, and a few people know your business by name, it will help you move higher up in business ranks. Once your marketing has paid off, then you will have more time for creating jewelry and enjoy showing off all of the new designs that your business has developed.
