Finding the right person to represent your interests in a real estate sale or purchase can be a trying exercise. With such a huge number of agents available in a city such as Chicago it can seem like the choices are endless and there is really no assurance of finding that person that works right with you as a customer. So what can be done to remedy this problem? Well, there are a number of things that you could do starting with doing a bit of legwork of your own. Take some time to go through the local real estate websites and find out who has a site that seems to work for you. Of course you will be looking for someone who specializes in your chosen area so an abundance of information on that given area is a great thing to look for.

You can also utilize some basic questions like; "What can you offer that is different from every other agent out there?" "Are you always going to be available to answer questions/show the home?" Essentially you need to ensure that your purchase or sale is going to be a priority to the agent no matter what. Its also a good idea to find out if they work alone or with a team. Depending on the agent this can be a benefit or a drawback. One the plus side it could mean that there are more people available at any time to deal with you or on the negative side it could mean that your needs get lost in communication from one representative to another. Be careful to evaluate how the agent and or the team communicates as this is likely the most necessary skill for any agent to possess. If these is a breakdown in communication then how can your needs as a customer be properly addressed?

Beyond communication an attention to detail and a willingness to go the extra mile to complete a sale is a good thing to look for. Do not be afraid to ask for references and check them out thoroughly. What better way to assess the agent's abilities then to talk to those that they have worked with in the past?
