by Joel1 Vance, Joe

It's now time to sparkle at the revered meeting with your prospective new boss- yes the interview to secure the job of your dreams! Your fabulous CV and resume certainly dazzled them, outshining all of the others; so now let's go for gold and land that job! The key to interview success is to be prepared as possible.

So you've managed to get your Cover Letter, CV and/or resume stand out from the crowd and it's landed you that revered meeting with your new prospective boss? Well done! Now it's time to win the prized trophy at the season's end. So let's get started!

First impressions do count: Dress appropriately for the role of an interview; generally the rule of thumb is to wear your best work outfit. The key factors to consider are cleanliness, simplicity and smart business type attire. Do not chew gum or smoke under any circumstances.

Be punctual: By doing a little planning before the interview, you should have no problem arriving on time for the appointment Your punctuality and attitude tells the interviewer much about you. If you are late, remain calm and explain briefly, as you apologize for your unfortunate delay.

Be positive: Sit up straight in a relaxed but confident manner which exudes positive self esteem- no slouching, looking down or fiddling! Look the interviewer straight in the eye when listening and speaking. Be aware of your body language, and if nerves are some what quivering; to get them under control; remember that the interviewer is merely another person and not some almighty god to be feared! Use your imagination; see that person in a vulnerable state if that helps! No giggling though!

Always turn negatives into positives. Instead of giving excuses regarding poor or inferior experiences, acknowledge them briefly and then turn it around by explaining what you have learned and how you have grown from it.

Shine- it's your interview: Be sure to speak clearly, honestly and confidently during the interview as you already know and believe that you can do the job effectively. Be proud of your skills, experience and what you can bring to the company and position. Be professional but still allow your own unique personality shine.

Listen and listen well: It is important that truly listen and comprehend all that the interviewer is asking and discussing with you. If you have questions do be sure to ask! A word of warning though: there isn't anything worse for an interviewer than being bombarded with irrelevant questions that have already been well and truly discussed in detail; as this questions your ability to comprehend information.

Research the company or position: It's very easy to research the company or position that you are applying for and the information that you find will be of tremendous value to you for your interview preparation. You can request such information personally, or go to the company's website and find it yourself.

Practice makes perfect: Practice your interviewing skills with a friend, family member or even in front of a mirror. Practice makes perfect- or at least calms the nerves and makes it easier. If in doubt on the day; keep your answers brief, to the point and succinct.

It's true that with practice interviews become easier and you become more confident. Have a look around you- everyone, everyday is having an interview of some kind. Be it a formal interview for a job or an exchange of information just as when friends discuss a luncheon date, a movie or even contemplate moving overseas. Now you can see that it's not that difficult; it's just a matter of a little practice and knowledge!
