Drug Detoxfication Points Of Interest
by Chris Channing, Chr
Drug detoxification is a set of interventions meant to control drug intoxication and withdrawal. The goal of detoxification is to remove the substance of abuse from the patient's body. The process of detoxification is meant to lessen the physical effects of addictive substances. Psychological aspects, social factors, and behavioral issues that come with drug addiction are not necessarily treated through detoxification.

Through drug detoxification withdrawal symptoms of drug users are reduced and relieved while at the same time drug users begin to adjust to living without drugs. Keep in mind that drug detoxification is just an early step in a long-term treatment; it is not a full treatment. Drug detoxifications along with treatments normally last several months and are held by community programs in residential centers.

Three Steps In Becoming Free Of Burden

The first step of drug detoxification is the evaluation step. Through the process of evaluation a patient is tested to find out which substances are in their bloodstream. Along with the substances in the bloodstream the amount of that substance is also determined through evaluation. Patients are also tested for co-occurring disorders, mental issues, behavioral issues, and dual diagnosis.

Stabilization is the second of the three steps in detoxification. The stabilization process guides patients through detoxification. To get through this, patients can use medication or they can choose not to, however, it is more common that patients will use medication to help them through the process. Through stabilization patients are told what they are to expect when they go through the treatment and recovery process. Occasionally family members or people who are close to the patient will be asked to come in to show their support and become involved.

The third and final step of the drug detoxification process involved guiding patients into treatment. Through this process patients begin to get ready for things to come in the actual recovery process. Patients generally agree to enroll in a drug rehabilitation program in order to complete their detoxification process.

Rapid detoxification is a type of drug detoxification for more serious drugs. Rapid detoxification was developed for opiate based substances such as methadone, vicodin, heroin, and narcotic pain killers. Rapid detoxification is generally performed in a hospital with the use of a general anesthesia. Certified anesthesiologists accompanied by specialized nursing staffs oversee these types of procedures. A patient undergoing rapid detoxification is put under anesthesia and then given medication that will accelerate the physical reactions of the withdrawal process that can last up to six hours.

It's hard process to get off of drugs completely, but with drug detoxification you will be on your way to a clean start. Drug detoxification is just the start though; it will only prepare you for what you will be facing in the future and lessen the physical effects of substance abuse. You should keep in mind that after you have made it through the three steps of drug detoxification that you should go into rehab if you are truly serious about getting off of drugs. Becoming drug free isn't easy and it won't be quick, but through detoxification you will be on your way to becoming drug free.
