Design A Unique Victorian Room
by Rob Carlton, Rob
The design of interiors during the Victorian period was very unique, once you have seen it once then it will be very hard to miss in the future. I'm sure everyone has seen the picture of a lady dressed in Victorian style clothing holding an umbrella getting into a small boat. This is a very romantic image, especially as someone is helping her into the boat.

The Victorian style is very popular at the moment, especially in the New England states, there are a number of key things that you need to do to ensure that you create a genuine Victorian themed room.

History

The Victorian era is so called because of queen Victoria, it started in England and was the time period between 1837 and 1901. People loved the Victorian era because it was a peaceful time but also filled with innovation fuelled by the industrial revolution. Many people became rich during the Victorian period.

Many people view the Victorian era as a very positive period of time, even people that were not alive to experience the real thing think very fondly of that time. Victorian architecture is very grand and awe inspiring. The interior design was very complicated, many people would consider this as being too cluttered today. However the style lives on in many people's homes as it is a number of peoples favorite style.

Wall Coverings

Wallpaper is one of the innovations of the Victorian age, although this has actually been around since roman times it is only since the Victorian period that it resembles what we now class as wallpaper. All types of people would use wallpaper just to show that they had enough money to cover their walls with lots of beautiful colors.

Wallpaper became a kind of status symbol, which in turn meant that anyone decorating a home in the Victorian age should try to use wallpaper. This means that if you are trying to create a Victorian style home then you should use some wallpaper featuring Victorians motifs. If you don't like wallpaper, then you probably won't want to create a genuine room, you might just want to consider collecting Victorian furniture instead.

Flooring in Victorian times were usually hard wood floors which were kept in very good condition with a lot of polish and hard work. They would also use decorative throw rugs to add warmth, and break up the dark colors of the wood.

Wall to wall carpets weren't a common sight, if you have carpet and want to create a Victorian effect then you should consider ripping them up and fitting hard wood flooring instead. Circular photo frames are also very popular when creating a Victorian theme. The Victorian theme can be a very beautiful one if it is done properly and with enough attention to detail. Personally I think that you should take the extra effort and do it properly!
