There are many things that a restaurant owner is prepared for, but what about assisting someone that ends up chocking while there are eating food? Some will say this is looking for the negative in things but the risk is very high since people will always show up to this type of business due to the fact that they are hungry. One moment a person can be talking and enjoying their food and they next they are panicked and fighting for air.
In such instances being able to respond quickly is very important. While there isn't going to be someone choking in your restaurant on a regular basis you don't want to leave them to fend for themselves. It isn't fair to rely on the chances of someone else that is eating in your restaurant to be able to take care of the situation.
By law an owner of a restaurant doesn't have to learn how to do such procedures. They aren't legally held responsible should someone choke on food in their business either. Yet that doesn't mean you don't have an ethical responsibility to help your customers when they really need it. How you choose to handle such an issue is completely up to you. It is a good idea for you to have some other staff members trained as well so that someone how can help is available.
There should be plenty of locations around your area that offer such courses. Some of them are free while others have a very low fee associated with them to cover the cost of the materials. You can complete the course in a couple of days and know you are prepared to help anyone that may be choking at your restaurant.
As their boss you need to tell them that there won't be any cost to them. You also need to let them know you will be paying them for the time they spend at the training. It is wrong to expect them to give up that time and not to be compensated for it. Should you have staff that just aren't comfortable with such procedures it isn't a good idea to force them into attending.
There are different techniques to use for helping an adult and a very young child who is choking. Make sure that the program you take offers the procedures for both groups. With severe choking incidents, the individual may also require CPR after the object has been removed. With this in mind you need to make sure the course you take also covers the process of giving CPR correctly.
Look for one that has mannequins that you can practice on as well so you can get a good idea of how the procedures should actually be performed. Small classes are nice too so that everyone gets plenty of one on one training. You should take a refresher course in these techniques every couple of years as well.
Hopefully you will never have to experience someone choking as they are trying to enjoy the food you serve in your restaurant. Yet it is a possible scenario and it is the responsible business owner that is always prepared for anything to happen.
