Choosing The Right Gadget As Gift - Some Thoughts
by Georgina R Lohan, Geo
The gadget sector nowadays is particularly popular with children and teenagers. Kids today grow up fast and gadgets often appeal to their need to be grown-up whilst still giving them something fun, useful and educational.

There are many different kinds of gadgets available for kids and teenagers. The rise in popularity of portable media such as MP3 players, video games and portable DVD players has opened up a whole new gadget sector that any child will want to tap into. Many kids also like electronic, remote controlled or robotic gadgets. These can range in size and complexity from small key-ring sized gadgets through to large robotic creatures and characters. And, with so many children and teenagers now owning a mobile phone there are all kinds of fun and useful gadgets in that sector as well.

Knowing which gadget to buy

Kids seem to own just about everything nowadays and new crazes come and go with alarming speed. It can be extremely difficult, for example, to know what is hot in the teenage gadget market as an adult. When looking for a gadget as a gift for a child or teenager it's always worth talking to them first before you buy anything.

Even the most taciturn teenager will talk gadgets given the right prompting. For example, if thinking of buying a teenager an MP3 player then a simple way to find out what they would like is to ask them which brands are good. Pose the question as if looking for advice on buying a player for someone else so they don't suspect what is going on. Finding out what younger children want can be a little easier as they usually have no problem discussing their likes and dislikes!

Don't forget to consult a parent before you make a buying decision. They may be planning on buying the gadget themselves, the child may already own it or may not enjoy actually having it. In some cases the parents may not actually want the child to have the gadget in question -- this is obviously important to know!

Buying an appropriate gadget

Gadgets don't always have to have the same standards imposed on them as toys but this doesn't mean that standards aren't important here -- especially if the gadget is designed for use by young children. To be safe look for a standards mark such as those given by the BSI (including Kite Marks and CE marks for example).

If the gadget is being marketed as suitable for children then also take some time to check the recommended age range. If in doubt check with the parents as they will have a clearer idea of what will work for their child.

Conclusion

Make sure to talk to both the parents and child/teenager before buying a gadget as a gift -- this way it really will hit the mark!
