[C228]Carnival In Trinidad Tobago
by Bill Morgan, Bil
Though Trinidad is considered the main islands of the nation of Trinidad and Tobago, it is Tobago that holds a majority of the resorts. Trinidad's hotels, mostly used by businesspeople and tourists in search of culture instead of white sand, are by no means new. New developments are, in fact, quite rare.

So when the Hyatt Regency announced that it was opening a new luxury hotel in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, more than a few people were happy with the news. The Hyatt Port-of-Spain is probably the classiest hotel on the island that never quite lived up to its tourism potential.

The Hyatt is located on the waterfront, walking distance from Downtown. The views of the water are a major selling point for the hotel. The gritty downtown streets are not the most scenic in terms of views, but the pace of street life is something that many people find exciting. The rooms do not stand out, but offer all the amenities you would expect from a four or five-star hotel: spa services, several restaurants, pool and exercise facilities, and Wi-Fi (for $15 per day). But what is unique about the Hyatt Port-of-Spain, aside the views offered by its waterfront rooms, is the fact that it is brand new, but already at the top of the heap in terms of service and luxury in Port-of-Spain.

The Trinidad Hilton is in the midst of a major renovation. The finished product won't be unveiled for more than a year. So, for now, the Hyatt can enjoy being to only game in town.

Unlike Tobago, where weekend rates are higher, the Hyatt in Port-of-Spain has rates that double during the week. This is because it caters mainly to business clientele. Conference attendees and business travelers coming during the week will pay twice as much as weekenders. That makes the Hyatt a good spot for a weekend getaway in Trinidad.
