Herbal Medicines For Boils Treatment
by Franchis, Fra
A boil is a local infection in one or more hair follicles, usually caused by the staphylococci bacteria. Boils, or furuncles as they're also known, are fairly common-it's believed that most people get at least one during their lifetime. While they can occur anywhere, boils are most likely to appear on the face, neck, armpits, buttocks, breasts, or thighs. When a cluster of two or more boils form a connected mass under the skin, it is called a carbuncle.

Typically a boil grows rapidly over several days. As more pus collects within the boil, the area grows more tender and painful. Finally, it comes to a head with a white or yellow center in the nodule. It then bursts, drains, and heals.

Poor hygiene, poor general health, friction between skin and clothing, and disorders such as acne, dermatitis, diabetes mellitus, or immune deficiency disorders all make you more susceptible to boil-causing staphylococci.

Signs and Symptoms

Large, swollen, pink or red lump under the skin, usually filled with pus

Pain, itching, and localized warmth in the surrounding skin

General fever

General fatigue

Conventional Medical Treatment

Because a boil usually ripens and drains on its own within 10 to 14 days, medical assistance isn't always needed. Apply warm, moist compresses to accelerate the healing process. When the boil (or carbuncle) is on or near your nose, cheeks, forehead, or spine, however, it can spread more rapidly and can become a brain abscess or spinal abscess. In these instances, prompt medical treatment can help prevent serious complications.

Have a doctor examine any carbuncle or boil that persists longer than two weeks or has redness surrounding it. With boils that last more than two weeks, there's the threat that the infection may spread to the bloodstream or internal organs. In these more serious situations, your physician may prescribe an oral antibiotic or surgically drain the boil.
