Apart from attending, the groomsmen can also brainstorm with the best man to help in the party planning.

Aside from the bachelor's party, there's the rehearsal dinner too. It's important for groomsmen to attend these functions so that they'll know what's going on and they can understand their role in the wedding itself. In attending these functions, they don't really need to bring gifts every time. And as a groom, it's good if you let them know this beforehand. The groomsmen are needed for their support, friendship, and camaraderie, not for the gifts that could give. If anything, the groom should even be the one to give them gifts for appreciation.

Let's not forget that groomsmen aren't just on the wedding list because it's tradition. They're there to lend support to the groom on his big day. Letting groomsmen help out with stuff and making them an active part of the wedding process, will make these men realize their importance in the wedding more than anything else.
