What You Should Know About Countertop Materials
by Dror Klar, Dro
The value of the property will increase substantially if you do a good job bringing the kitchen up to date and the type of counters that you choose to have installed need to be appropriate for the appearance of the room.

When it comes to counter materials, you have a few different options to choose from, but a large number of remodeling jobs are choosing stone and natural materials for this application.

If you want to go with a cheaper material, you can use a laminate or ceramic tile, since these are pretty affordable. If you want to replace the material that already exists in an outdated kitchen and not do any real upgrading, then this might be the way to go.

Laminate is easily damaged by scratching or chipping very often and any water that gets underneath the resin will cause the wood to swell up and deform.

Ceramic tile has its own perks and drawbacks. This is one of the only types of countertop material that can be done yourself, since all the other materials need special skills and tools. Any mistakes that you make, though, will be readily visible.

This is much cheaper than laminate, coming in at about $10 a square foot. The bad thing about tile is the grout, since it is difficult to clean and needs to be sealed more than once over time.

The higher end stuff is natural and engineered stone. This includes slate, granite, and marble for the natural stone materials and the engineered stones are made of pebbles, epoxy, quartz, and other materials. These will make your kitchen look very high-end.

The bad thing about stone is that it needs to be sealed. Natural stone also does not handle heat as well as some would like, but engineered stone does a little better in this aspect. Engineered stone also does not stain as easily.

The last material that you could have installed in your kitchen as a countertop is stainless steel. Be prepared to shell out a good amount of cash for this, though. It has been used in commercial kitchens for a long time and can be made into almost any shape you need.

Making the right choice for you and your home is an important step. Make sure you are aware of the options, pro's and con's of each product before making your final choice.
