Avoiding Dementia And Possibly Alzheimers In Your Twilight Years
by Mike Hepburn, Mik
Keeping your mind sharp is important as you get older, because an active mind is a healthy mind. It can make your winter years more enjoyable and make your life better in general. If you keep engaging and challenging your brain, you can keep it healthy. Activities to help with brain health include healthy dieting and learning new skills. You can do a crossword puzzle each day or learn a new hobby. Choose something that interests you so you can keep motivated and enjoy it.

If you take part in activities which make you assess information quickly, think on your feet and expand your horizons, it will make a lot of difference as you get older. It might take more effort than it did when you were younger but using your brain more will result in an improved memory and better cognitive skills. Many older people blame their age for not being able to do things but if they try, they will find these activities strengthen the brain, so age isn't an excuse!

The brain shrinks as you reach your sixties and some parts shrink more than others, such as the frontal lobe, which handles mental abilities, and the hippocampus which stores memories. The brain thins in the cortex area and the white matter decreases as you get older. This is why the elderly sometimes suffer from brain disorders. The cognitive processing is slowed down by these changes, so it is harder to make decisions, keep a long attention span and solve problems. This will happen as you age, unless you exercise these areas of the brain by enjoying brain-enhancing activities and form new daily memories.

Aging, however, does not result in a decline of brain activity. The brain gets sharper and stronger as you keep using it and skills include problem solving skills and wisdom. Bear in mind that other illnesses might contribute to the normal brain activity declining, although there are ways to keep your brain as healthy as you can.

Simple things such as education can help to stimulate the brain and it might help to strengthen the brain cell networks to prevent damage to the mental functions. Learning a new language can be fun and you might get to try it out one day. Physical activity is beneficial to the brain and an aerobic regime can help with brain health, as the oxygen flowing through the body accesses the brain and makes it healthier. Knowing that there are things you can do can make a difference, contributing to the common good and having a good sense of self can reduce cognitive decline in adults.

To slow down the effects of the brain degenerating, it is worthwhile to make an effort to concentrate and pay attention. Be organized rather than always in a rush, so you can focus properly on what you are doing. Repetition is good. Try to keep stress-free because tension can cause memory lapses. You can turn senior moments into senior memories if you exercise your brain regularly. Do whatever you need to do to preserve your mental agility and stay happy and alert, even if you are getting on in years. When you compare elderly people, you can see that some of them are happy and satisfied and others are depressed and act as though they have given up on life. Make sure you are in the former category and there is no reason why you can't keep your brain active and functioning well.
