Second Career: In Retirement
by Linda Waters, Lin
When people have been retired for a long time, and have done everything that they wanted to do, they can sometimes get bored and start to look for other things to do. Some people look to a second career to keep themselves busy. The difference between finding a career now, as opposed to before you were retired, is that you can find a career that you would enjoy doing.

The first thing to realize is that there are a lot of opportunities out there for you. You have a lot of knowledge and experience that you can bring to any career. Even if your previous career has nothing to do with what you want to do, you have still learned valuable skills that you can apply to anything. Having these skills can be very helpful when looking for a career. Most employers are looking for experienced people, and this could set you above the competition.

Time is on your side now, you can attend classes, and lectures and informational gatherings that can help you gain more knowledge on what you would like to do. Wanting to do something and knowing how to do something are two different things. If you know what you want to do, but don't know how to do it, going to these classes and lectures can help you become successful in a potential second career.

However, if you liked what you were doing before retirement, and still want to be involved with what you were doing, becoming a teacher is a great second career. Passing knowledge of what you have learned in your past career, weather it be skill-sets, technical aspects of your career, or tips-and tricks. Students are hungry for knowledge and what better way to gain that knowledge than from someone who actually made a living in that career. What would the world be like if no one passed down knowledge of what they had learned to the next generation?

Retirement or ending your first career doesn't have to be the end. If you get bored with sitting at home a have the urge to get out and do something, a second career is ideal and financially beneficial. You have all these abilities and skills learned from your past career that you can put to use with something that you want to do, and you even have the ability to pass the knowledge down to people to want to learn.
