Protecting Your Home From Allergens
by Mark Jackson, Mar
Allergens can be anything from dust to pet dander. When people have an allergy to something, it is usually allergens that are the culprit. Even though most homes have ventilation systems that keep the air clean, those who have pets or who live in certain regions that produce a lot of pollen, it can be difficult to keep an allergy attack from occurring. But there are products on the market that can help reduce allergens in your home without disturbing your lifestyle.

One of the best ways to keep allergens to a minimum is to use additional filters in your home. From standing units to vacuums with HEPA filters, there are many that can help reduce the amount of allergens. Since allergens can become stuck in carpet, furniture, clothing, curtains, and in other places around the home, it is important to dust, vacuum, and clean your home often. But even after cleaning thoroughly, allergens can still be present. Using filters can help reduce the allergen level in your home even more.

Vacuums that have HEPA filters not only clean the dirt and debris from carpeting and hardwood floors, but also trap it inside the bag or canister so it cannot be redistributed in another part of your home. Filters can also trap allergens that are floating in the air. When you use a vacuum with a filter, you will begin to notice a difference in the air quality in your home. While your allergies may not disappear completely, they will not be as bothersome.

When an allergy attack occurs, you may feel dizzy, you may develop a headache, sore throat, coughing fits, or you may begin sneezing uncontrollably. This is your body rejecting the allergens that have gotten into your system. If you have pets, you may need to purchase additional filters to place around your home and purchase a vacuum that has an allergen filter that reduces the allergens in your home.

While you can take medications that can help reduce the number of attacks, the long term affects can be devastating. By taking precautions in your home and reducing the allergens, you will begin to feel healthier and have more energy.

It is important to empty all canisters each time you use the vacuum and vacuum bags every month or so in order to truly rid your home of allergens. If you are allergic to dust, wearing a face mask when emptying dirt and debris into the trash is a good idea. You can also empty it into another bag and then place it in the trash. Cleaning the vacuum cleaner filter is also recommended so it will work more efficiently when you are vacuuming and cleaning your home.
