Copper Weathervanes ? Show Style And Sophistication
by Jesse Akre, Jes
Since Roman times weather vanes have been a part of culture. Today, they are growing in popularity. Among the most popular weathers vane are the copper weathervanes. If you have noticed they are scattered throughout the world on rooftops, garages, barns and even commonly noticed in yards. It is official; the weather vane has made its comeback, loud and clear. The specific reason why so many homes are now proudly displaying copper weathervanes is not clear, but surly among the reasons must be the look and character one can bring into any yard.

The original collectible copper weathervanes were more often than not manufactured between the end of the Civil War and the start of WWII. However, they were not actually made by hand as the ones were prior to the Civil War. These ones were generally molded in order to meet the needs of the numerous shapes that were in demand at the time. Among the most popular of that time were the horses, but also commonly found were deer, roosters, and even fish. The two halves of the mold were usually welded together in order to make a single piece.

A main concern among people that previously and currently own copper weathervanes is the process in which the shiny surface is created. For the most part it can take several years before the glossy green look on the copper is achieved. Although, a lot of manufacturers of copper weathervanes have developed a process that through a chemical reaction can actually cause the beautiful green shiny look that copper is so well known for. This gives a person the chance to have what appears to be an old copper weathervane sitting nicely in their yard or atop a roof or garage.

Copper weathervanes are still available in many different varieties. Making your choice depends on the style and design you would like. Size will also be a factor when making a final decision on the perfect copper weathervane for your outdoor area. Be sure that the size you choose does not over power the area in which it will be.

Copper weathervanes are beautiful however; if they are too large for an area that they have been placed in it will only make the area look awkward. Probably not the look you were striving for. Keep the size in equal proportion to the area, not too big and not too small. If it is too small, you have wasted the money spent on it because odds are, it will not be visible at quick glance.

Copper weathervanes should be noticeable without having to search for them. It should add life to your yard by complimenting the existing objects within its general area. A helpful tip prior to placing your new copper weathervane is to take a look around the yard. Find that spot that needs just a little something more to draw your eye over there. That is where the new addition should go.
