Tapestries Unfurled
by Kelly Larose, Kel
The term tapestry refers to a heavy fabric made up of bright and various kinds of shades which displays a particular design or scene. Most of the time a tapestry is used as a wall adornment item but at times it is also utilized to conceal furnishings in homes or offices. Such an explanation of this term has been provided by The American Heritage dictionary.

Weaving was started during the ancient times for the purpose of producing baskets. At that time, stiff fibers were utilized for such a purpose. After the establishment of loom, individuals started to utilize flexible fibers. The distorted strands are held firmly with the help of a loom during the weaving of crosswise strands.

Not many modifications were done to the loom prior to the eighteenth century. Later on various types of creations paved way for the looms to be mechanized. The majority of such creations were done by the English people. At the time of Industrial Revolution, more and more people stopped weaving with hands. However, there are few countries that still produced tapestries by weaving.

The basics of weaving did not alter much throughout various time periods whether it was the pegs on the ground or the mechanized looms that are offered in the market today. Weaving has three features and they are making of the sheds, picking and beating. Warp is the base of the fabric and threads are woven to produce weave. After that, design is created. Likewise, the warp threads are raised to pass them through the shutter. The gap that is created is referred to as shed. The line of threads that is to be woven is referred to as pick. Beating is done to make sure that the shed is flat and it is pushed down so that it lies above the earlier pick.

You can find the charming hand made tapestries in museums, churches, etc. These embellishments would be carried by noblemen from one location to another. On special occasions, cathedrals would hang these tapestries.

At present, you will find tapestries that can be placed over a cushion or hung on the walls. No matter where you decide to place it, it can be used as a kind of family heirloom which you can pass on from to one generation to another.
