Search engine optimization also known as SEO is one of the most effective things that you can do on the internet to increase your web traffic and get more potential customers or clients. Optimizing your website for the search engines is how to move your site up in the organic search engine rankings. The higher you are in the rankings, the more traffic you will receive.

SEO is not rocket science, but it is a time consuming, ongoing process. Unless you have a few hours each day to focus on optimizing your website, you should probably leave it up to a professional firm to handle your campaign. If you do have the time to do it yourself, there are five simple things that you can start doing today to help you move up in the search engines. I will list each of them below and go into a little detail for each of them.

1- You must do proper keyword research for your website. Before you build your website, or at least before you begin marketing your site online, you need to find out exactly what keywords you will want to target in the search engines.

2- You need to always use header (h1, h2, h3) tags. If you use a header tag on each of your web pages, it is like screaming at the search engines what you website is all about. The search engines will have a better idea of where to place you site when someone searches for it.

3- You need to use proper keyword usage, also known as density. Try to use your keyword 2-3% of the time in your text. If you overdo it, you are asking for trouble.

4- Make sure to use contextual links. You need to do everything in your power to get visitors to your site, have them visit a lot of pages on your site, and pushed toward the product or service you are trying to sell.

5- Update, update, update! Make sure that you update and add content to your website on a regular basis. No one likes coming back to a website and finding that nothing has changed. Keep things fresh and new. Not only that, the more often you update and add content, the more often the search engines will visit and index your site.

By implementing these things on your website, you will have greater chances of moving up in the search engines. Like I said at the beginning of the article, SEO takes time, don't give up on it after a few weeks.
