by Jerry Leung, Jer
First of all, you should not leave the appliances in the standby mode. The appliances are still consuming electricity when they are in the standby mode. You have to switch off them completely. This will help to to save a lot of your electricity bill.

You can avoid using a dishwasher. You can use your hand to wash your dishes. If you still want to use a dishwasher. Make sure that you let the dishes to dry naturally. You do not need the dishwasher to help you to dry the dishes since you are not running a restaurant which needs to use the dishes once they are washed.

You should also use energy efficient appliances or light bulbs. This will help to save 15 to 20 percent of your electricity consumption. For some light bulbs, they may even help you to save up to 80% of electricity consumption. However, the point here is that you have to be very careful when you are purchasing the energy efficient appliances. There is no point to purchase an appliance which costs a thousand dollars more than a normal one while it can only help to save a little bit of energy.

Special attention should be paid to the air conditioner. Be sure that you will switch off your air conditioner when you do not need it. This is because the air conditioner can consume a lot of electricity. If it is possible, you can set a timer so that the air conditioner will switch off automatically after a few hours. This will be very useful at night. You do not really need to switch on the air conditioner for the whole night. If you are someone who sleep eight hours every night, switching it on for 5 hours will be more than enough.

The above is also true for your water heater. You should switch the heater off when you do not need it. There are people who would like to heat the water all the time. However, do you really need hot or warm water all day. You will probably only need it when you are taking a shower. So, you should switch the heater off when you do not need it.
