How To Incorporate Mediterranean Decorating Into Your Home
by Lee Dobbins, Lee
When you think of the Mediterranean, immediately, locations like Italy, Spain, and Greece come into mind. These are the areas that create the basis for much of the decorating that goes on in homes all over this country. Rich, earthy colors, and many decorative pieces displayed throughout the home are some signature items that reveal this decorating style.

A home with a Mediterranean touch is a colorful and textured home indeed. There are rich, earthy tones plastered on all of the walls. There are rusty colored pots with herbs growing on kitchen window sills. If there are no real herbs growing, there are pictures on the walls of herbs growing so lightly that one could almost smell the pungent oregano scent wafting through the kitchen inviting one to a freshly cooked spaghetti dinner.

Throughout a home of this type, there will probably be knickknacks reminiscent of the old country. There may be pottery with olives painted on them. There may be religious relics that would bring one back to the holy city of the Vatican. There may be scenery of vineyards and bottled wine. There will most likely be a wine rack with Merlot, Chianti, and Sauvignon. These items will adorn a house fashioned after a Mediterranean spirit.

This home is furnished with a variety of types of furniture. There may be very simple and practical furniture. Chairs and couches that are functional as well as eye catching may be in this type of home. There also may be very ornate and heavily decorated furnishings. This type of furniture may have textures such as raised velvet paisley on a colorful pillow. There is truly a large variety of furnishings in a house decorated after the Mediterranean style, but again, these furnishings will have color. The colors of the furniture will either contrast with or match the colors in their chosen rooms. Either way, they will show their origination with not much more than a glance.

Tile is a necessity in a Mediterranean home. It can be fixated on a kitchen backsplash, or adorn a foyer. No matter if it's permanent or decorates the side of a mirror or other accessory; rest assured, there will be tile in this home and it will be mosaic. Mediterranean style design does not see tile just for practical flooring, rather, tile is seen as artwork. It enhances the color scheme that is laid out on the walls or it adds texture to a decorative piece in the home. No matter how it's used, it will be present and it will be gorgeous. It's hard to compare to a mosaic tile that was painstakingly pieced together into perfection.

A home decorated in the Mediterranean style is indeed a piece of artwork. It's a beauty to see and pleasant to live in. The best feature of all, it's easy to create this style in your own home.
