Making The Transition From Offline To Online Tutoring
by Heather Eagar, Hea

Where once before, the only option was to invite a stranger in the home – or meet outside of the home – to receive assistance, now it can be done online. However, if you're accustomed to this form of tutoring, you may be a bit hesitant about making the switch. If this is the case, here are a few benefits to making the transition from offline to online tutoring.

Still Working with Live People

One cause for hesitation with online tutoring is the fact that you no longer get the face-to-face, live interaction. While it's very true that you don't have access to body language and facial expressions, you do have access to a live person in many instances. There are a number of great resources available that make sure to have a qualified tutor ready to chat with students so that they feel that same sense of companionship and camaraderie that they're used to when working with a person in the same room.

Added Convenience

One reason that many students jump at the chance to work with an online tutor versus taking on the face-to-face tutoring session is the convenience that online tutoring can provide. Think about it; in the past, you had to coordinate schedules with a tutor, find a place to meet, make sure you had all of your materials, and actually arrive on time. However, with an online tutor, so much of this hassle is reduced or eliminated entirely.

For instance, whereas you had to coordinate schedules offline, in an online environment, you normally will be assigned a time by the tutor to meet that you agree upon without much hassle. This of course is coupled with the fact that meeting times are not as difficult to schedule when you can physically meet anywhere as long as a computer is in tow. You can sit in your house, visit your favorite cafĂ©, or park yourself on the beach – whatever you'd prefer. Your only job is to make sure you meet online at the time designated and you're ready to go. This is definitely a convenience you don't get with the face-to-face tutor.

Cheaper Rates

Another great benefit to taking on online tutoring is the cheaper rates. If you're working with a private tutor or learning center, you may find yourself paying anywhere from $30 to $50 an hour. However, if you work with a company that offers tutors online, very often, you can make a monthly payment that equates to the above hourly rates – or you may be able to pay one fee for the year that then allows you 24-hour access to tutoring assistance. How great is that?

Because there are so many great resources to take advantage of online, it's good to jump on the bandwagon to take advantage of this new tutoring venture. You never know; you may learn that you benefit more from it than offline tutoring.
