Collecting Miniatures
by Lily Morgan, Lil

Collecting miniatures isn't for everybody but to those who enjoy it, it can be a wonderful hobby. Some people choose to collect them because of a game or story affiliated with them while others simply do so for the decorative aspect. It doesn't matter what your reason is for collecting miniatures, so long as you enjoy them. A great amount of work often goes into the creation of miniatures as most of them are completely hand painted.

Whatever collection you choose to begin, it's important that you enjoy it. Passion is necessary for all forms of hobby as it is the backbone of the entire experience. It's important to note that the collection of miniatures is not something that should be undertaken in the hopes of obtaining a great monetary value. It is about creatively displaying something that you love. Though miniatures can in some cases go on to gain worth, it is unlikely to be substantial enough to set out to do just that. It just cannot be anticipated.

Miniatures should be stored properly at all times. Most people choose to put them out on display somewhere. They should be up high enough to prevent children from reaching for them. They can be quite small and may possibly present a choking hazard. This is important to note if you have small children in the home. Room temperature is best for most miniatures. Temperatures too hot or cold can result in disfigurement, especially if moisture is involved. A glass display case is a good idea for safe storage while keeping them on display for all to see. There is surely no sense in storing them away out of view.

If the miniatures that you collect come packaged with any form of official documents, it's absolutely essential that you keep them safely stored. If anything were to happen to the item you would be required to produce this paperwork in order to prove the authenticity of the miniature. Likewise, if you wish to insure the collection then you must take care to keep all of the receipts. Even if your collection is not of great value, it is still worth whatever you paid for it. In the event of a fire or flood, insurance will need proof of the collection's worth in order to successfully replace it.

Though it may sound outlandish to some, there is always the option of designing and distributing your very own miniatures. As collecting miniatures is a hobby to some, to others the crafting of them is a hobby. If you possess a skilled, steady hand then perhaps creating a collection is of interest to you. There will certainly never be any question as to the originality of the pieces. Many vendors of miniatures choose to sell their wares online. This is not at all unrealistic. Rather, it's simply a matter of locating those who want to purchase such items.

Collecting miniatures is as rewarding a hobby as any. The truest reward comes in the enjoyment one receives with each and every piece.
