About
Simei is a very small housing estate located in the eastern part of Singapore. It is close to the Pan Island Expressway and the East Coast Parkway, and lies in between Tampines and Bedok, two much larger estates.
History
The name “Simei” is a Chinese word that literally translates into ‘four beauties'. In the void decks of certain blocks of flats in Simei, you can find Chinese paintings of exactly that – four beauties. Simei is a relatively young estate that used to be a kampung (village) by the sea. The sea is no longer visible from Simei since land has been reclaimed in the area.
Residential
As Simei is a housing estate, the area is a residential one. You can find all types of housing there, from HDB flats to condominiums to landed property. Of late, Simei has become a popular place for expatriates.
In the centre of Simei, you can find
- NTUC Eastpoint Mall, located beside Simei MRT. This shopping centre organizes the line dancing activities every Saturday.
- Changi General Hospital, which is 500 metres away from Simei MRT.
- The headquarters of Metta Welfare Organization, a Buddhist charity organization for the needy. The organization's hospice and school are also located in Simei,
- ITE College East ( Institute of Technical Education ), which is a new campus encompassing an area of 10 hectares.
Simei is close to Tampines, Changi, Tanah Merah and Bedok. Simei residents enjoy heading to Simpang Bedok, located 5 minutes from Simei by bus, where you can find many 24-hour coffee shops. There are also many country clubs near Simei, such as Tanah Merah Country Club and Laguna National Golf & Country Club.
Industry
While Simei itself does not have any industrial areas, it is located very close to the industrial region of the Upper Changi area. In front of Simei is Singapore Expo, a large complex constructed specially for international conventions, concerts and exhibitions. Behind the Expo is Changi Business Park, where the offices of companies such as Fitness Plus, Ultra Technologies and Credit Suisse are located.
